green-peace-mt-rushmoreIf you want to get technical about it – they hung the banner next to Mt. Rushmore. Well, next to the carvings, anyway. Not sure if the whole mountain is ‘Mt. Rushmore’ or the carvings alone are ‘Mt. Rushmore’. Anyhoo – they hung the sign next to the carvings, not covering any of the faces.

I’m still listening to the livestream on Ustream – I came in at the tail end of it. The Greenpeace climbers had just been run off at the top of the mountain and the park rangers were dealing with taking the banner down. The man speaking on the livestream, representing Greenpeace, had thought that the Greenpeace climbers were getting to take the banner down, but, then realized that they’d been sent away and the rangers were doing it.

Greenpeace had a guy on the ground doing the filming, trying to be sort of stealth in his operation of the camera. He has also since been run off, but, the camera (audio only) is still rolling, so we are catching some of the conversations.

The whole point of the exercise was a message to President Obama about global warming. The banner said:

America Honors Leaders, Not Politicians. Stop Global Warming.

Here is a YouTube video about the action taken today:

And now Greenpeace has released a gorgeous photo of the banner in place via their Twitpic account:

And here is an awesome, very clear, version of the banner itself:
