PhotobucketA few weeks ago our high school band, of which both of my boys are a part of, had their district band assessment. Now, when they first told me about this, I kind of got a screwed up look on my face. You see, our ’school district’ is comprised of TWO schools – our elementary and our high school. So the whole thing sounded funny to me. I realized, though, that we have participated in the neighboring district’s activities quite a lot, and they have plenty of schools in their district. I think they just kind of let us tag along, because, we’re all by ourselves.

However, I forgot one thing – one very weird, bassackwards thing that state school systems do. When they said ‘district’, they didn’t mean ’school district’, they meant the larger ‘district’, comprised of multiple school districts. I know in Richardson, TX, we were in District 10. I learned that when I was PTA president, and it was a constant source of confusion.

“Oh – you mean the school district?”
“No, no – not the school district, the district district.”

Uh, yeah – whatever. Could they not have called them something else?! Really?! Gah!

Anyhoo – this is not supposed to be another public school system rant of mine, now, is it? No, I’m supposed to be here bragging my buns off about our band!

They did so AWESOME at the district assessment, that they are now going to the STATE ASSESSMENT! Woohooo! And the really cool thing, for me, si that they are wearing their tuxedos again. See, for district, they wore tuxedos sans jackets (even the girls) and they all looked so freaking adorable! However, Patrick had spent the night with his friend and the two of them got there late, so I didn’t get a chance to get a picture of him.

And I didn’t really get too many good pictures of Shawn, either. We had to get up early on a Saturday morning and get them to school, so they could ride in the buses over there. So there was not a lot of photo opps, you see.

Here is Shawn in the dark of the house, crack of dawn, eating breakfast – with his tie untied.

Now, don’t let me get all sappy on ya, but, as I sat there across the table from this gorgeous young man, I could see the future – it was just so bittersweet. Like maybe, a young daddy, grabbing some breakfast, before he runs off to work. Sure, young daddies don’t wear tuxedos, but, you know what I mean. Especially you mommies. Seeing the future is sometimes so vivid for us, it hurts. Wow. It’s heavy-duty stuff, man. Do you daddies get that, too? I mean, you really see it. You really see it. Ok, shut up with this talk – I’m gonna start crying – and then I won’t be able to finish this post!

So then I drove him up to the school, and the band room was a sea of black and white – from the walls and the big drums, to all the adorable, monster-y children:

And the band director (he’s so cool, we all really like him!) was dressed in all black. It was just too cool! I did get a picture of him, but, it’s not blog-ready. I’ll be taking plenty of pics tomorrow, though, as I’ll be with them all from 6AM until 7PM – OMG! My picture card will be totally full and I will be completely exhausted!

And just for good measure – here’s one more of my Shawn-man with some of his friends, working on getting his tie tied. I’m telling you, that kid is just too cute. (He’s the one with the purple arrow. Purple is his favorite color.) I might be a tad biased – but, don’t let that cloud your judgment – this kid is cute! Ha!

Ok, I’m off to prepare for our journey to Tuscaloosa. I just love that name – some southern towns just have pretty names. I always thought Savannah, Georgia was just a pretty-sounding town, and turns out – it is! One of the hubby’s relatives lives out there and described it to me as beautifully as I always pictured it to be! So I get to see if Tuscaloosa is beautiful, too – or just ‘another town’. I’ll have lots of pics to share!
